Saddam's Hanging : Even Devils Have Space
It’s a week since the former Iraqi ruler Saddam Hussein was executed inviting worldwide remorse over his hanging. May be the act of hanging shown to the world had something more to do with the indignation over the execution than a general sympathy for the Iraq’s former dictator.
Nonetheless, a section of the people world over besides the Muslims have joined the rally against awarding death penalty to Saddam and his subsequent hanging on 30 December 2006 in Baghdad. Frankly speaking, hanging is horrible and worst kind of execution after the act beheading.
It should not be surprising if in today’s world the likes of Hitler, Mussolini, and Osama bin Laden were to be hanged till death, a section of the people would have reacted in similar fashion as they did over the execution of Saddam forgetting all the crimes, dastardly and barbaric torture and killings of hundreds of thousands of people by these Devils.
The immediate concern to the United States is enhanced threat perception from the radical Islamic outfits that are itching to strike at America and other European countries with a vengeance.
As of now, the protests over Saddam’s hanging particularly in Islamic countries have been moderate. It seems, there are not enough friends or sympathizers of the executed Saddam even in countries like Pakistan ready to die for Saddam. May be latent strikers are waiting for opportunity to hit the Americans but that threat has always been there.
For Washington it is a relief that Iran is dominated by Shias – the Muslim sect who were tortured and killed at the hands of Saddam who was a Sunni.
Looking back at the history of the perpetrators of crime against humanity and mass murderers, one finds that even today there are sympathizers / admirers of Adolf Hitler, not only in Germany but in some other parts of the country. In India, an enterprising hotelier had opened a restaurant in Mumbai in the name of Hitler. He was forced to change the name and remove the NAZI logo and photographs of Hitler from his restaurant after the Government of India intervened.
Nathuram Godse, the man who killed Mahatma Gandhi in 1948 was also hanged till death after the trial for murdering the Mahatma. A section of the Indians, then and now, were and are admirers of Godse.
And mind you, Osama bin Laden who appears to be dead still had followers ready to die for the cause they don’t know!
As the debate goes on to abolish death penalty from criminal justice, I for one favour total abolition of death penalty. The convicted persons should be sentenced to rigorous imprisonment instead to experience the pain of living. For death releases a person frol all the sufferings?
